At Fifty-One

At fifty-one looking back is useful,
Enough distance to provide perspective;
A hilltop - past paths are discernible;
An open mind thoughtful and reflective.
Atop this vantage undulating paths
Move in inexplicable directions
Reflecting decisions I made in times past
From which I arrive at one conclusion.
The turns I took to change myself, my core -
Excess strain, unnecessary labor;
Ending up on the same trail as before
Regression to the mean in behavior.
But these digressions weren't without value
Because I found wisdom I put to use.
