Anniversary 24

My search for you began at ten
I prayed that I would find you
In the midst of this big wide world -
That you’d be looking for me, too

Tied to the shirt tails of my parents
They towed me down to Texas
Little did I know in my teen years
Our lives had already found nexus

You lived not too far from me
Though our paths never crossed
Somehow our friends connected
But to each other we were lost

My life took turns that took me
Far from my childhood dreams
That childhood prayer for you
Was childish now it seemed

For life illuminated my folly
In believing in a fairy tale
I held no hope for happiness
At that time sadness prevailed

But God had heard my prayer
All that time He was faithful
While you lived and labored
Unaware of His gentle pull

A decade passed from our teens
We were back in the same city
Again friends formed the ties
To finally bridge this proximity

I must admit it surprised me
That you could overlook my past
You took my hand and my heart
And said we’d look forward not back

Twenty-four years have passed
Since the day we said “I do”
My childhood prayer was answered
I hope yours was too
