The World Is Too Much With Us

The world is too much with us
You say this as a joke
But everytime you speak those words
It’s on those words I choke

And I try in earnest to respond
But always in silence I remain
And feel these words to the depth of my soul
Where they deliver their sharpest pain

For I know what this world has cost me
I know the price I pay
I know the debt will not diminish
Aught before judgment day

So I’ll listen to your joke in silence
And choke on the words you speak
And wonder why it is this way
And why it is I feel so weak.
