We Don't Recognize the Precious

I see you, and humanity compels
Me to ask "How are you doing today?"
You respond "Thank you, I am doing well,"
We shake hands as we pass then walk away.
Several days a week our kids practice
Giving us an hour to talk together;
As we talk the precious minutes pass us,
Our topics as mundane as the weather.
Our souls yearn for meaningful connection
In a world where men are largely aloof;
Yet in these lucky moments for union
Talking of weather is the best we do.
The chance to connect we often can miss
Because we don't recognize what's precious.
