She Posed the Question

She posed the question with no real intent
Curiosity surely her only motive
My mind on memories then was bent
My brain steaming like a locomotive.

I passed through blue filled summer days
On a farm and in a small city
Learning about the country ways
In the state of the Big Sky Country.

And I can't imagine life without you
But I know that day will come
A day I'm not looking forward to
Whoever said the best is yet to come.

Back then I was merely a lad
And my granflolks seemed so old
And you were a young man then, Dad
Your life a story yet to be told.

We'd sit there in that living room
Your dad so proud of the things you'd done
And I'd wiggle up close beside you
Dreaming of the man I'd become.

And I can't imagine life without you
But I know that day will come
A day I'm not looking forward to
Whoever said the best is yet to come.

The years have passed and we've changed places
Now I'm the man in the middle
And my son wears my old young face
Heaven, life is such a riddle.

And soon you'll be off to see your dad
And it'll be me in that room with my son
And Oh what joy there will be to be had
As I sit with my son and his young one.

But I can't imagine life without you
And I know that day will come
A day I'm not looking forward to
Whoever said the best is yet to come.

I hope I can put this to  music
Before that day arrives
In a form so I know you won't lose it
In that eternal home up in the sky.

'Cause if I can give you this gift
Then I know I'll always be with you
And when I play it, it'll give me a lift
As it carries my soul right to you.

Because I can't imagine life without you
But it will only be mortality
And it won't be long 'til I am with you
Because we are an eternal family.
