Spare Me the Night

Black wings
Eclipse the setting sun
The latch is loosed
The mind is on the run

Beating, flapping
The darkness encroaches on the light
Oh please, please
Please, spare me the night

In daylight
All the world is fine
The sun bleaches out
The subconscious mind

The world
Sees you, the poster board you
But with the night
Another you; and what can you do

Enervated
My façade cannot hold him back
He enters my world uninvited
He paints my world black

Pleading, begging
I fight to keep him in
A useless battle
I simply cannot win

I cannot see beyond the present minute
I cannot bear another second

How soon
Will the blackness give way to day
To shut the cage
And hold the beast at bay

For a few
Short hours he will hold his peace
‘Til night comes again
And he is unleashed
