The Toddler Sees Her Mother

The toddler sees her mother as a god:
She knows everything - mom’s omniscient,
She’s all powerful - to be feared and awed,
At her beck and call, mom’s omnipresent.
The teen sees dad as a major hindrance
Like a locked gate to the park at sundown,
He spoils plans, and curtails independence,
And subdues his spirit when he's around.
The young adult sees her parents as old,
What they say is quaint but not serious,
Out of sync with the times they sound like scolds,
The things they say she'll readily dismiss.
Children don't mature fast enough to see
The fullness of parents' humanity.
